What Is the Spirit Behind False Prophets? By Apostle Martin Wilson

Even from biblical times, there have been those who falsely claim to speak on behalf of God to deceive others and edify the kingdom of Satan. Indeed, the phenomenon of false prophets misleading people in God's name is not new. Throughout biblical history and beyond, individuals have claimed divine authority to manipulate and mislead others. Let's explore this further:

Biblical Examples of False Prophets

In the Old Testament, the Bible records numerous instances of false prophets. For example, in 1 Kings 22, we see the story of King Ahab and the 400 false prophets who told him what he wanted to hear, leading to his downfall.

In the New Testament, Jesus himself warned about false prophets.

Matthew 7:15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves." The apostle Peter also cautioned about false teachers in 2 Peter 2:1–3.

Characteristics of False Prophets

Deception

False prophets often employ deceptive messages as a primary tactic. Instead of conveying God's truth, they tend to preach what their audience wants to hear. This approach appeals to people's desires and biases, making their messages more palatable and easier to accept. By doing so, these false prophets can gain a following and influence, even though their teachings may deviate significantly from genuine biblical truths. This characteristic underscores the importance of discernment and a solid grounding in Scripture for believers to distinguish between true and false prophetic voices.

Personal Gain

Personal gain is a common motivator for many false prophets. They often exploit people's faith for their own financial benefit or to gain power and influence. This manipulation of believers for personal advantage is in stark contrast to the selfless service expected of true spiritual leaders.

Contradict Scripture

Another characteristic of false prophets is their tendency to contradict Scripture. Their teachings frequently deviate from or directly oppose established biblical truths. This disregard for the foundational principles of faith can lead followers astray and create confusion within religious communities.

False Predictions

Failed predictions are also a telltale sign of false prophets. Unlike true prophets of God whose prophecies come to pass, the predictions made by false prophets often fail to materialize. This pattern of unfulfilled prophecies serves as a clear indicator of their lack of divine inspiration and authority.

Need for Discernment

The persistence of false prophets throughout history underscores the importance of discernment and a solid grounding in biblical truth. As believers, we must always test the spirits, as instructed in 1 John 4:1, to distinguish between true and false prophetic voices.

What is the Spirit Behind False Prophets

From reading Scripture and studying the Satanic kingdom, I have come to believe that the driving spirit behind false prophets is the spirit of Beelzebub.

Beelzebub is also known by many as the "lord of the flies," and is often associated with deception and manipulation.

His very title, though singular, has been debated by scholars to hint at a dominion over those who "fly"—those who are lifted by falsehoods and led astray from the truth.

Matthew 12:24 "But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, 'This man casts out demons only by Beelzebub the ruler of the demons.'"

The Pharisees, who would have been very astute in the Scriptures, said that Jesus was casting out demons because of his association with "Beelzebub the ruler of the demons." When it refers to "flies," it could be a metaphorical term speaking of how demons, like natural flies, thrive on dead things and cause corruption of those things that are pure.

Consulting With Devils.

There is an Old Testament passage where King Ahaziah of Israel falls ill and seeks to consult Baal-zebub (another name for Beelzebub), the god of Ekron, about his condition.

2 Kings 1:2–3 "Now Ahaziah had fallen through the lattice of his upper room in Samaria and injured himself. So he sent messengers, saying to them, 'Go and consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, to see if I will recover from this injury.' But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite, 'Go up and meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them, "Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going off to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?"'"

This passage illustrates the practice of consulting false gods or spirits, which is strongly condemned in the Bible.

The practice of consulting false gods and spirits is generally referred to as divination or occult practices. While many people recognize traditional forms of divination as wrong, there are modern-day examples that some might not immediately consider problematic:

  • Consulting horoscopes or astrology for guidance
  • Using tarot cards or psychic readings for decision-making
  • Engaging in palm reading for insights into one's future
  • Relying on fortune-telling apps or websites
  • Participating in séances or attempting to communicate with the dead
  • Using pendulums or dowsing for answers to questions
  • Consulting mediums or channelers for spiritual guidance

It's important to note that these practices, even when seeming harmless or entertaining, can be considered forms of seeking truth or guidance outside of God, which is cautioned against in the Word of God.

Based on the information provided, God's response to King Ahaziah seeking counsel from Baal-Zebub (another name for Beelzebub) was one of disapproval and rebuke. God sent the prophet Elijah to intercept the messengers of the king and deliver this message:

2 Kings 1:2–4 "Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going off to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron? Now therefore thus says the Lord, 'You shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.'" So Elijah went.

2 Kings 1:17 — "So he died according to the word of the Lord that Elijah had spoken."

God was so displeased with King Ahaziah for his divination that He gave Elijah, a true prophet, a word that the king would die. This response indicates that God was displeased with the king's decision to seek guidance from a false god instead of turning to the true God of Israel. It emphasizes the importance of relying on God rather than consulting other spiritual sources or false deities.

False Prophets are False Consultors

The spirit behind false prophets thrives on being consulted, especially by those seeking divine power or knowledge while living contrary to God's will. This is why Beelzebub is often identified as the driving force behind false prophets.

The Importance of Aligning Our Lifestyle with God's Word

Living a lifestyle that aligns with God's Word is crucial for every believer. It's not just about knowing Scripture, but about applying it to our daily lives and allowing it to transform us from the inside out. As we read in Romans 12:2, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."

When we align our lives with God's Word, we demonstrate our love and obedience to God (John 14:15), reflect Christ's character to the world around us (Matthew 5:16), and experience the peace and joy that come from living in God's will (Psalm 119:165). Additionally, this alignment protects us from the deception of false teachings (Ephesians 4:14) and helps us grow in our faith and spiritual maturity (2 Peter 3:18). By consistently applying biblical principles to our daily lives, we not only deepen our relationship with God but also become living testimonies of His transformative power.

Aligning our lifestyle with God's Word requires intentionality and discipline. It involves regular study of Scripture, prayer, and a willingness to apply biblical principles to every area of our lives—from our thoughts and attitudes to our actions and decisions. This alignment isn't always easy, especially in a world that often promotes values contrary to God's Word, but it's essential for our spiritual growth and effectiveness as witnesses for Christ.

Remember, our lifestyle is a powerful testimony. When we live in alignment with God's Word, we not only experience the blessings of obedience but also become living examples of God's transformative power to those around us. As we strive to align our lives with Scripture, we can trust that God will empower us through His Holy Spirit to live lives that honor Him and reflect His truth to the world.

Influenced by Devils

False prophets, under Beelzebub's influence, become vessels of deception, spreading lies that can appear as truth. These individuals are often drawn to consult Beelzebub, with themselves being deceived, thinking it is God, because they crave the illusion of divine insight or authority, but in reality, they become puppets of darkness.

False prophets become enamored with the attention their false knowledge brings them in the church from undiscerning people. This spirit feeds on the pride and ambition of such prophets, leading them to believe their words carry divine weight when, in fact, they are being manipulated to spread confusion and lead people away from God.

Conclusion

Beelzebub's influence is subtle yet powerful, enticing those who seek spiritual power without grounding themselves in the truth of God. He exploits the desire to be seen, to be heard, and to hold authority, leading false prophets to speak from a place of delusion rather than divine revelation. This is why discernment is crucial in spiritual matters, as the enemy's tactics often involve disguising lies as truth, leading many astray through the influence of the "lord of the flies."

It's essential to recognize that Beelzebub doesn't just deceive; he commands and controls those who allow themselves to be lifted by pride and falsehood. This makes him a particularly dangerous spirit in the realm of spiritual warfare, especially when it comes to the integrity of prophetic voices.
